FIFA World Cup trophy arrives in Bangkok

The FIFA World Cup trophy arrived in Bangkok yesterday following a stop in Ho Chi Minh City as part of a world tour that brings the coveted prize to 83 countries.

Diehard football fan Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva received the 18 carat, solid gold trophy in a ceremony at Don Mueang Airport and was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying “I am glad to touch the trophy,” as he hoisted it in the air.

The general public can view the FIFA World Cup trophy on Saturday at the Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon, from 10am 8pm, before it heads south to Jakarta.

The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa from June 11 July 11. Though Thailand isn’t in the competition Abhisit did offer his take on the event, saying his dream final would involve a European side taking on a South American team.

Abhisit, born in England, has made his support for English club Newcastle clear on many occasions, though he was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying he did not believe England is good enough to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The label of “South American revelation” might be too heavy for Gerardo Martino’s squad to deal with, but up to the moment the Paraguayans have stand for their name proudly. A highly tactical team with a sharp offense will take on Marek Hamsik’s Slovakia for the top of the group, a trophy deserved only for the winner. The Eastern Europeans still have to take on the Squadra Azzurra, while the Guaranies are expecting New Zealand for their third match.

Defy the king

Once again the Paraguayans proved their worth in a world championship, having stood up against the Italians for their place within the best sixteen. Thanks to Antolin Alcaraz the Albirroja could have won the debut match, but nevertheless the result was positive for Gerardo Martino. Team’s coach declared “We are more than satisfied with the result, Paraguayans can dream with the title. We can face any rival on equal terms, we’re really optimistic regarding our future”.
